Sail Newport Announces Annual Awards

NEWPORT, RI (December 7, 2018) – Sail Newport, Rhode Island’s Public Sailing Center announced several community awards at their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday.

Rhode Island State Representative and Chair of the House Committee on Finance Marvin L. Abney (D - District 73, Newport, Middletown) was honored with the Sail Newport President’s Award for his longtime support of Sail Newport and advocacy for the organization's public access mission.
“Sail Newport is an organization near and dear to my heart and it is truly an honor to receive this recognition from them. They provide an invaluable resource to the children of Newport and I look forward to continue working with them in the future to ensure Newport’s children have the ability to enjoy and learn from Newport’s historic sailing culture,” said Chairman Abney.

Sail Newport's President of the Board of Directors Amy Kempe said, “Representative Abney understands and supports the role Sail Newport plays in providing young people from all backgrounds access to the water and sailing through our community-based programming such as the Pell School, STAR Kids, and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, and he is a great advocate in communicating the important role this organization plays in driving economic development in Rhode Island,”

Also, two volunteers were recognized for their outstanding work with Sail Newport’s 2018 Team Appreciation Award. Paul Hazlett (Saunderstown, RI) and Bill Heller (Newport, RI) both received the award.

Hazlett received the honor for his work as a race committee member for Sail Newport’s regattas and events. Some of the events he volunteered for included the Volvo Ocean Race Newport, the Sail Newport Youth Challenge, the annual Newport Regatta, the I420 World Championships, Sail for Hope, the 2019 Opti New England Championship and others.

“Paul has been a dedicated volunteer at Sail Newport for many years. This year he worked on every one of our regattas from the spring through the fall. He is very skilled and is an experienced and fun member of our team,” says Matt Duggan, Sail Newport regatta manager.

Bill Heller also received a Team Appreciation Award for his shore side support of many events and regattas at Sail Newport. Heller served on the committee to recruit and manage the volunteer program for the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover in May. That program gathered over 600 volunteers for the 13-day event at Fort Adams State Park.

“Bill embodies the traits of an incredible volunteer. He is always ready to help with an incredibly positive attitude and dedication to help Sail Newport host the thousands of sailors each year who participate in our events and regattas,” said Hannah Lasorsa, Sail Newport office manager and volunteer coordinator.
