On Thursday, June 14 things started with a rigging and tuning clinic lead by our great coaches. Friday brought light conditions for sailors to practice their boathandling and boatspeed, with many groups sailing north of the Newport Bridge due to the start of the Newport to Bermuda Race.On Saturday the Lasers and 29ers sailed outside of Newport in the ocean, and were treated to perfect 8-10 knot conditions and waves.Michael Kuschner, from Sail Performance Training, was on hand for the entire clinic to work with all of the sailors on fitness, stretching, health, and nutrition. Sunday, June 17 was our annual Clinic Regatta.Continuing with the light air trend of the clinic, the regatta was sailed in a light S/SW breeze of 2-8 knots and run by race committee expert Ken Legler. Only two races were sailed by each class except the 29er class that only were able to get in one race.

Congratulations to winners Sarah Burn (Short Hills, NJ) and Patricia Gerli (Washington, DC) in the I420 class, Caroline Bayless (Arnold, MD) and Abby Tindall (Annapolis, MD) in the Club 420, Ryan Anderson (Halifax, Nova Scotia) in the Radials, Leo Boucher (West River, MD) in the Laser Full-Rigs, and Taylor Hasson and Steven Hardee, both from Christiansted, USVI.

At the conclusion of racing on Sunday awards were given to the top teams in each class and Sail Newport passed out great technical shirts to all of our competitors and coaches. Finalists for the Brooke Gonzlaez Award were Club 420 crew Kaleigh Morgan (Barrington, RI), Radial sailor Mateo DiBlasi (St. John, USVI), and 29er skipper Hayden Earl (Boston, MA).Mateo DiBlasi was given the Brooke Gonzalez award, with all of the coaches agreeing that Mateo best exemplified Brooke’s sailing spirit and exceptional attitude. Congratulations Mateo!

Special thanks to the Gonzalez Family, Jim Menzies and the Quantum Sails Group for supporting the clinic and providing us with some incredible coaches, U.S. Sailing, Laser Performance, Zim Sailing and Sturgis for providing charter boats, everyone who housed our great sailors, the entire Sail Newport staff, and our great coaches. Thanks as well to coach Ken Legler for taking great pics from Sunday’s racing and throughout the clinic. He is planning to get them out to all participants soon if not already.

We look forward to seeing all of you next year!
