Brooke E. Gonzalez Adv. Racing Clinic 2013

A message from Head Coach John Mollicone:

The 12th Annual Sail Newport Advanced Racing Clinic in memory of Brooke E. Gonzalez, held June 13-16, was another great success with a record number of participants and near perfect weather. Great breezes ranging from 5-18 knots made for two great training days culminating with a southerly for the regatta day on Sunday.

Boat handling and boat speed were the focus for the first two days along with starts and races. 12 International 420s teams participated, 23 Club 420 teams, 26 Laser Radial sailors, and new fleets of seven Bytes and six F16 Catamarans rounded out the group of 116 sailors. Ranging in age the sailors traveled from 16 states and Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, England, and Singapore.  Many of the nation's top sailors were in attendance to jumpstart their summer sailing and get some top-level coaching.  Coaches this year included:

Zack Leonard, Yale University Head Coach and 4-time U.S. Team Race Champion 
Elizabeth Kratzig-Burnham, U.S. I420 Worlds Coach and 8-time U.S. Sailing Team Member 

Ken Legler, Tufts University Head Coach and Professional Race Manager 
Isabelle Kinsolving Farrar, 2004 Olympian and 2008 470 World Champion 
Alice Manard Leonard, 10-time member of the US Sailing Team in 470s and Match Racing 
Nick Ewenson, Coached College Sailing Teams to 5 National Championships 
Justin Assad, Co-Head Coach at Dartmouth College and 2008 NEISA Coach of the Year 

Bern Noack, Harvard University Coach and Coached Four College Sailors of the Year 
Ed Baird, America’s Cup Winner and former Laser World Champion
Mike Kalin, Former Canadian Sailing Team Member and sailed in more than 10 Laser Worlds
Cy Thompson, 25th at 2012 Olympics in Laser Class and College Sailing Singlehanded Champion
Brian Swingly, U.S. Coast Guard Academy Head Coach and 2013 NEISA Coach of the Year 

Leandro Spina, U.S. Olympic Coach in the Star (2012) and Nacra (2016)

Richard Feeny, 2-time All-American at Brown University and Extreme 40 Catamaran Champion 
Robbie Daniel, 13-time U.S. Sailing Team member in the Tornado Class and 10 National Titles Sunday

On June 16  the Clinic Regatta included races on trapezoid courses run by Coach Legler in a building seabreeze of 6-15 knots. Congratulations to winners Casey Klingler and Fiona Walsh (Darien, CT) for the second year in a row in the International 420 class, Kyle Comerford and Nicholas Floyd (Annapolis, MD) in the Club 420,Malcolm Lamphere (Lake Forest, IL) for the second year in a row in the Radials, Henry Marshall (Newton, MA) in the Byte class, and Sarah Streater and Erik Weis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) in the F16 class.  

Laser Radial sailor Alexandra Maurillo, who traveled all the way from Singapore, was given the Brooke Gonzalez award.  The coaches agreed Alexandra best exemplified Brooke’s sailing spirit and exceptional attitude. Congratulations Alexandra!
