Race Training, What is next?

"So, We have done little guppies, and 2 seasons of the 2 week program and my child is 9 years old...  They really like sailing!  What is next for them? "
Well, we are glad you asked!

In 2010, Sail Newport and Ida Lewis Yacht Club collaborated on a new program to create a bigger base of racing sailors in Newport.  It is called "Brenton Cove Racing".
Brenton Cove Racing is a 3 day per week all day program in Optimist Dinghies, Club 420's and Lasers.  Ages range from 9 to 17 years old. There is a regatta schedule that include Narragansett Bay events and regattas around New England and even nationally.  Brenton Cove Racing requires that your child have at least one year of "Advanced or "Green Fleet" experience in either Optimists, Lasers or C 420's. To that end, both Ida and SN have created Intro to race programs that will get our kids to the level of joining this program.
Sail Newport has the 4 week Race Training Program in C420s (for 14 and above aged sailors) and for Optis ( a true "Green Fleet Program")  Each meet 5 days a week for 4 weeks in late July and Early August.  The end of the program is the annual US SAILING Jr. Olympic Festival for Narragansett Bay.  This event, also called NBYA "Jr. Race Week" is hosted in various locations around the bay and is a fantastic "intro" to travelling to regattas.  Coaching and a boat is supplied to each of the Race Training participants for the Sail Newport Race Training Program.

RACE TRAINING for OPTIS (currently called Pre Art):

  • July 25 - August 19
  • Mondays - Fridays, 9am - 3pm, with coaching during the 2011 NBYA Junior Race Week

RACE TRAINING for 420's (currently called Pre Art):

  • July 25 - August 19
  • Mondays - Fridays, 9am - 3pm, with coaching during the 2011 NBYA Junior Race Week

SN Sailors will group up with Ida Lewis's Green Fleeters in Optis as will the C420s join in with the Ida Lewis Advanced 420 group from time to time.  They will also have a chance to combine some practices with the Brenton Cove Racing Team sailors when schedule permits.
The Race Training Program at SN is the logical step for all children who wish to learn to race with a goal of being part of Brenton Cove Racing.
