2015 Sail for Hope

Stay tuned for information for the 2016 Sail for Hope, Saturday October 15, 2016

RACING CANCELLED FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3
PARTY WILL STILL BE HELD AT THE IYAC!

Unfortunately, weather forecasts are grim and we have decided to cancel racing on Saturday. However, we will still hold a party on Saturday from 4 PM to 7 PM at the IYAC for sailors and guests.

Please join us at the IYAC (536 Thames St.) in Newport.  Our wonderful sponsor Newport Shipyard will move their chowder to the IYAC and the bar will offer drink specials. To raise needed funds for the very important charities, a suggested donation of $10 will be collected at the door.

Pat Kennedy says bar proceeds on drink specials will be donated to the Red Cross and the Warrior Sailing Program at Sail Newport.

If you have not already notified us, please let us know if you want a refund on your entry fee or if we should split that amount and donate to the two charities! Hit "reply" and reference your boat please.

NOTE: There will be no dockage at Sail Newport this weekend.  If you store your boat at Sail Newport, please come and make sure the boat is secured to the ground.

2015 marks the 15th running of Sail for Hope.  In 2001, in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and in the skies over Pennsylvania, a few local sailing enthusiasts scrambled to organize a regatta to honor and support those affected.

The first Sail For Pride Regatta rallied over 180 boats and $110,000 designated for charities to support the NYFD firefighters, police and the victims of the attacks and their families.

The display of patriotism and generosity on and off the water made a lasting impression in the sailing community. After the inaugural year, the organizers retired the name Sail for Pride, but continued the event as Sail For Hope, reflecting the Rhode Island state motto and aimed at supporting local charities.  Charities supported over the years have included RI Red Cross, Seamen's Church Institute, Newport Harbormaster's Emergency Equipment Fund, local public high school sailing teams, US Olympic Sailing Trials and many more, including a huge fund-raising year in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

2014 marked another great year for the Sail for Hope regatta.  On a great day for sailing, over 80 teams circled Conanicut Island on Saturday, October 4.  Ranging from speedy Marstom 32s to a Hobie 14 to our fleet of J/22s, we were happy to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project and RI Red Cross.

To date, nearly $1,000,000 has been raised for various charities. For more information on the 2015 running of Sail for Hope, email our Race Manager today.
