sign.jpgEveryone Can Learn to Sail at Sail Newport!

Sailing is truly a unique sport: skills learned now can be used and enjoyed for a lifetime. Sailing challenges both the mind and the body allowing individuals with different strengths and weaknesses to find their niche. That niche might be competitive or recreational: you can sail big boats or little boats, by yourself, with a friend, or as part of a team.

The primary aim of the Sail Newport Youth Program is to develop solid sailing skills, and to provide inspiration to young sailors, from the beginner to the advanced or racing sailor, with an emphasis on fun and safety. Students are taught in boats commensurate with their age, size, ability and interest. Sail Newport uses dinghies like the Optimist, Hunter 140, Nomad, Windsurfer, Club 420, and keelboats like the J/22 and Rhodes 19.

Safety, Swimming, and Age Pre-Requisites
Safety is first and foremost in the minds of the instructors.
optismall.jpgAll children under the age of 18 participating in any youth program must pass a swim check which will be held at the start of each session. The check involves a swim of 20 yards and treading water for 2 minutes.

The minimum age for the two week dinghy program is 7 years (by 1/1/08). For the one week keelboat program the minimum age is 12 years (by 1/1/08). For the Little Guppies program the minimum age is 5 years, and the maximum is 7 years ( both by 1/1/08).

Lifejackets will be worn at all times when students are on the docks or in boats. Sail Newport will provide lifejackets to all beginner and intermediate level sailors in the Optimist classes for 2008 thanks to a generous gift from the Jamie Boeckel Foundation.
