| Youth Sailors Launch the Season this Weekend GO TO REGATTA RESULTS
REGATTA REPORT As the results show, the talent was very impressive, and racing was incredibly tight, with several overall ties and very close results amongst the trophy winners.
On Saturday, only the Optimist class raced with 53 sailors in the White, Blue and Red Fleets. They used up the best wind of the weekend with a steady 8-knot south/southeasterly. For most of the day, the predicted rain held off, and despite a fierce current (due to the tidal flow of the New Moon cycle), the Opti Fleet was able to complete five solid races.
On Sunday, the northerly wind was lighter, but the current remained strong, which created challenging conditions for both the sailors and the race committee. Wind conditions averaged four to five knots with a few eight-knot puffs.
In the first Opti race of the day, the fierce current and light wind conditions held the vast majority of the fleet off the start line, forcing a general recall. After a one-hour delay, the Optis dialed up again and were able to complete three races over the afternoon. The Club 420s and Laser Radial Fleets were able to power through the current to complete six races today.
The top three Blue Fleet sailors Sean Walsh (Rye, NY), William Marshall (Auburndale, MA) and Will Logue (Riverside, CT) battled it out at every race start and finish. The three finished only one point apart for first, second and third place. Walsh won the regatta with all single-digit finishes including three first place wins in the eight-race series.
Marshall also won three races and never posted a score over fourth but finished one point behind Walsh in second place. The Fleet could have been one by any of the top three including Will Logue (Riverside, CT) who was only one point from Marshall and finished in third place.
In the Red Fleet, Graham Kilvert (Barrington, RI) and Matthew Kaplan (Larchmont, NY) tied for first place with 25 points each. In a scoring tie-breaker Kilvert emerged the winner for first place and Kaplan took home a second-place trophy. Newport sailor Hugh MacGillivray (Portsmouth, RI) actually won the most races in the Red Fleet but added points with a ninth place finish. MacGillivray captured the third place trophy.
The White Opti Fleet was dominated by Matt Logue (Riverside, CT). Logue blasted around the race course and won every single race. His final score only totaled seven after dropping an 11/OCS.
Madeline Pole (Mattapoisett, MA) finished in second place after a very strong weekend posting all scores fifth place or better. Abby Naughton (Marblehead, MA) won third place only three points out of second.
With all Opti Fleets combined, Marshall, Will Logue and Walsh – the same three who were one point apart in the Blue Fleet -won first, second and third place respectively in overall standings as the top three sailors in the regatta. Kaplan and MacGillivray finished fourth and fifth overall.
The Laser Radial and Club 420 Classes completed six races on their one day of racing on Sudnay. The Laser Radial fleet also had a tie for first place. Sophie Naughton (Marblehead, MA) beat two local sailors for the top Radial slot. Naughton punched a six and a five in the first two races but came on strong, winning the next three races. Those three bullets enabled her to win the tiebreaker over Casey Brown of Jamestown, RI who came in first, second or third in every race after the drop race. North Smithfield, RI sailor Norbert Mongeon finished in third place with all single digit places, only four points from Brown.
Seven Club 420 sailors came out to start the sailing season and shrug off the winter. Brad Adam and Chas MacBain (E. Greenwich, RI) posted a “picket fence” by winning every race (except one OCS). Max Simmons and Nick Barta (Rowayton, CT) has a solid and steady performance with three second-place finishes, a first and a third place finish. Simmons and Barta took home the second place trophy. Todd LaLumiere and Tucker Jones (Falmouth/ME) took third, finishing a mere two points behind Simmons/Barta.
The Sail Newport Race Committee, led by PRO Mike Levesque, worked long and hard to give the sailors two full days of fair and solid racing. Volunteers, judges and coaches worked together to make the weekend a great success. The parking lot was full of tired, smiling youth sailors and parents at the end of this season-opening weekend of racing.
