Sail Newport Advanced Racing Clinic 2003
| Optis Challenged in Newport Weather Young sailors traveled from seven states to participate in the two-day annual event at Sail Newport. A total of 57 boats competed on one circle of racing.
Sunday morning was more like a fall day with air temperature barely over 60 degrees, heavy downpour and flailing wind. By noon, the skies had cleared and the wind shifted Northeasterly but held steady at 10 knots. The sun never arrived but the sailors were happy to accomplish three more races today.
“When the wind finally picked up, we started to see some very close racing and photo finishes,” PRO Mike Levesque said. “Overall, the Opti sailors showed great skill during the two days of racing to warm-up for the youth regatta season,” he added.
In the White Fleet, Sail Newport’s William Marshall (Newton, MA) won first place. Dylan McGuckin from Ocean City Yacht Club in Ocean City, NJ scored second place and Sail Newport’s Henry Marshall (Newton, MA) was just behind his brother scoring well to win the third place trophy. FIYC/FAST sailor Patrick Rose (Dover, MA) was just behind Marshall in fourth and Julia Fuller (W. Hartford, CT), a FAST/CYC sailor scored fifth just six points behind Rose.
The Blue Fleet was dominated by Lily Katz (Brooklyn, NY) who was the class winner and the overall top girl in the regatta. Katz sails with LISOT and BBYC. Gary Prieto (Southold, NY) who sails with Old Cove YC scored second place and Tristan Sess (Center Moriches, NY) of TEAM GUST captured third place in the regatta’s biggest fleet. Ram Island YC/LISOT sailor Ben Wilkinson (Noank, CT) scored forth and Megan Grapengeter-Rudnick (Darien, CT) a Noroton YC/LISOT sailor came in fifth.
Taking two places on the podium, Red Fleet and the regatta overall first place went to Pearson Potts. Potts is from Pass Christian, MS and he sails with Southern YC and the GUST and FAST Teams. Connor Marion came in second in the Red Fleet and local RI sailor of East Greenwich YC Bradley Adam captured third place by swiftly winning the last race of the event. Fellow Rhode Islander Jack McGuire (Barrington) from the Camden YC was fourth and Charlie Lalumiere (Portland, ME) finished in fifth place in the Red Fleet.
Overall the regatta winners demonstrated impressive sailing especially by Pearson Potts who was the fastest sailor in the event. Potts came in third overall in 2007 and second in the 207 Red Fleet) Potts was followed by regatta overall second place winner Lily Katz. Katz must have been sailing this year as her impressive second place overall this year was preceded by a 2007 17th place overall.
Gary Prieto also had an impressive jump in placing in this event. Prieto scored thirteenth overall in the 2007 event but came in the top three this year winning the place overall trophy.
Tristan Sess was fourth and Connor Marion scored fifth best overall in the regatta.
Congratulations to all of the Opti Sailors who demonstrated true hardy New England sailing skills.
