The report has just come in via cell phone from the winners. Newport Etchells Fleet for the first time ever has a winner of the prestigious Etchells World Championship. Ken Read ( Newport, RI) Karl Anderson (Hyannis MA) and Scott Norris (Newport, RI) have won the Etchells World Championship in Greenwich CT. USA.

The Newport Fleet had one of it's members in first place the entire week with Bill Fortenberry winning Race # 1 of the series on Sunday, Sept. 21. Read and team then whipped off 2 firsts on Monday and another on Tuesday. Wednesday saw the Read/Anderson/Norris team have their only "hiccup". They finished the race 3rd, but found when they arrived onshore that they were OCS. "According to the RC, we were 2 feet over in the middle of the line" said Ken Read prior to sailing Thursday.
If they were demoralized after Wednesday, they certainly did not show it. Thursday the team blasted off 2 more firsts and virtually locked up the series.

Friday dawned a "normal" Long Island Sound Day. That means a dying Northerly and no real prospects for a solid breeze. This was the only condition where someone could really challenge Read and his team. But the crap shoot couldn't stop the team on 1262. With good speed and a conservative gameplan, they played the shifts to pass Peter Duncan 100 yards from the finish and win the final race. That win capped one of the most dominating performances in the history of the Etchells Class. To go with the 2003 Mastercard Etchells World Championships, Read has won 6 J/24 World Titles, 2 Etchells North American Titles, The Admiral's Cup as Helmsman for the USA Team and been the helmsman on 2 AC campaigns.
