RACE DAY ONE REPORT
NEWPORT, RI – (October 6, 2007) Two years of planning, practicing and organizing launched the start of the 2007 Paralympic Sailing Team Trials. The 2.4 Meter, Sonar and SKUD 18 sailors met outside of Newport Harbor all with a similar goal of earning a berth and the honor of representing the U.S. at the 2007 Paralympic games.
An unusual fall fog rolled in before racing but cleared in late morning in time for two races for all three classes. A 8-10 knot southerly stayed steady for the racing. Another fog bank rolled in during late afternoon hours and blanketed the Bay forcing the Race committee to shorten the final race of the day for the SKUD 18s.
Rick Doerr (Clifton, NJ), the current 2007 IFDS Disabled Word Champion, jumped out front quickly with crew Bill Donohue (Brick, NJ) and Tim Angle (Marblehead, MA) to win the first race of the Paralympic Selection Trials.
Jennifer French (St. Petersburg, Fla.) with crew Brian Kendall (Tampa, FL) and Michael Hersey (Hyannis, Mass.), came in second after Doerr. After Race Two was abandoned by a Rule 31.2 enactment, David Schroeder (Miami, Fla.), Keith Burhans (Rochester, NY) and John Pucillo (Waldorf, MD), sit in third place in the triple-handed class.
The Rule 31.2 race abandonment also applied to Race Two for the 2.4 Meter Class so standings with one race scored shows Charles Rosenfeld (Woodstock, Conn.) Mark Bryant (Estero, FL)and John Ruff (Pewaukee, Wisc.) lined up in first, second and third place respectively.
Racing continues tomorrow through Sunday, October 14 for all classes. One lay day is planned but not scheduled as of yet.
