Download the Program Description

The Brenton Cove Racing Program was created in partnership with Sail Newport BOD and Executive Staff and the Ida Lewis YC Board of Directors and Flag Officers. The program aims to foster increased opportunities for competitive sailors from the two programs. The program allows Sail Newport and Ida Lewis Yacht Club to take advantage of improved resource opportunities created through this cooperation. For logistical reasons, fleets will sail out of one club or the other. In 2010, Optis will sail from the facilities at Ida Lewis Yacht Club, while the C420s and Lasers will sail out of Sail Newport.

The program is about creating opportunities for racing experience for competitive sailors at all levels with appropriate coaches best suited to help them meet their individual sailing and racing goals. Teamwork and sportsmanship is stressed in a supportive environment. The Brenton Cove Racing Program is customized for sailors serious about racing Optis, Lasers and C420s. The program is designed to provide a comprehensive and intensive training, and practice racing format, coupled with local regattas in the Bay (both Team racing and Fleet racing) as well as travel to regional and national events. The coach/sailor ratio for Optis will be a min. of 6 and max. of 8, for the Lasers a min. of 4 and max. of 7 and for the C420s 4 boats min. and 6 boats max. per coach.
The program is a “bring your own boat” program for Optis and Lasers. C420 sailors should have their own boat, have someone they plan to sail with in the program with a boat, or talk to the program directors about a charter and/or finding a partner to sail with. It is expected, especially for C420 sailors in their first or second year of competitive sailing may not have settled in with a specific sailing partner (either skipper or crew) and we will work with them to find appropriate matches.
Management of the program (Optis, Lasers and C420s) is a cooperative effort with day-to-day management of the program handled by the Program Directors: Galen Largay-Ryley at Ida Lewis Yacht Club and Kim Hapgood at Sail Newport.
There will be two Open Houses: Wednesday, December 27th at 6:30 pm and Sunday, February 28th at 4:00 pm, both to be held at the Seaman’s Church Institute located at Bowen’s Wharf. This will be an opportunity to come talk to the program directors about the program, meet other parents and sailors interested in the program and get answers to your questions. If you cannot make either meeting—no problem!--questions or concerns can be directed to either Program Director by phone or email.

Practice Schedule
There is one session for the BRCP: Tuesday, June 22nd – Sunday, August 15th, 2010
Opti and C420 Racing Classes both meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (plus regattas) from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm each day. Laser (Radial and Full Rig only – no 4.7) practice on Wednesday and Thursdays from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. There are often optional practices offered on Mondays or Fridays, schedules permitting.

Regatta Schedule
Sailors are encouraged to work with their coaches to determine what regattas would provide them with the best opportunities for competitive sailing based on their goals, expectations and skills. At a minimum, participants the BCR Program are expected to participate in the NBYA events and Jr. Race Week. First and second year racers will be encouraged to sail at least one regional event, while it is expected that returning and experienced racers will typically focus on regional and national events. Again, if you have any questions about the regatta schedule and commitments, please talk to us!

Overview

WHAT:
ART is customized for students serious about racing Optis. The Opti ART program (commonly referred to as S.N.O.R.T. or, the Sail Newport Opti Racing Team) is designed to provide comprehensive and intensive training in a practice racing format, with opportunities to travel to local as well as regional regattas and events. Teamwork and sportsmanship is stressed in a supportive learning environment.

WHO:
Candidates for SNORT are expected to be capable of rigging their boat independently, should be able to demonstrate correct sail trim on all points of sail, and be comfortable sailing in any wind condition from very light to strong breeze and waves.
For 2009 there will be two SNORT teams of Opti racers, each with a dedicated coach:
Developmental Team:
The developmental team is for sailors who have limited exposure to competitive sailing. Ideally, they will have completed a two week Advanced or Beginner Racing Opti Class here at Sail Newport (or its equivalent), and/or have competed in an Optimist regatta. The Developemental Team of Opti sailors may not necessarily have much experience with sailing in a wide range of wind conditions, however, the expectation is that they want to go out and give it a try, and are ready to be appropriately challenged by new experiences.

Advanced Team:
The advanced fleet is for Opti racers with strong prior experience—on the water in practice settings as well as participating in regattas. Both Teams will typically have a busy schedule of regattas both here in the Bay as well as regionally.
Most importantly, all SNORT applicants should be enthusiastic about learning to race, making a commitment to a practice format of classes (as opposed to a “recreational camp” format and environment) and to participating in regattas.
If you have any questions or concerns about eligibility, please call the Program Director, Kim Hapgood (401) 846-1983 or email kim.hapgood@sailnewport.org.

WHEN:
The Opti ART program meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week, beginning Tuesday, June 22 and ending on Friday, August 20, 2009, from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. In addition to these practice days, there is a schedule of regattas that the teams will be attending, locally, and optional regional events that participants are strongly encouraged to attend as well, which typically fall on weekends. Mondays and Fridays are "off" days, or, depending on the regatta schedule, a travel day. Coaches also run optional small group practices on the Mondays and Fridays in early July, before the regatta schedule gets fully cranked up, to help give kids a little extra time on the water. These are typically scheduled week to week as need dictates.

REGATTAS:
The ART regatta calendar is an outline of the scheduled NBYA, major regional and national regattas available to Opti racers this coming summer. It is not expected nor desired that every sailor compete in every event. Coaches will help sailors and parents select regattas appropriate to a sailor’s skill level.

Regatta Schedule is TBA

ART Optimist Registration Fees
Cost for the nine–week program which includes NBYA Junior Race Week, ends on Friday, August 22, is $1125. Sibling Fee is $1010. These fees include coaching at all scheduled practices, and coaching at regattas listed on the published schedule.

It does not include regatta registration fees, or any membership fees that may be required to attend regattas (NBYA, US SAILING, USODA—please see below).
Opti ART participants are expected to have their own boats: please see below for further information.

Where to Find an Optimist Dinghy (Opti!)
There are several different builders of class-legal Optimists: Laser Performance and McLaughlin are the two US builders, and Winner and Lange are two of the big European builders.
New boats can be found at dealers like the Laser Performance Sailing Center, Portsmouth, RI (401-683-0800) and Sturgis Boatworks (508-778-9187) in W. Yarmouth, MA. Both are great sources of information on used and new Opti gear and equipment.
Sail Newport also has a limited number of used Vanguard Opti's for sale this spring as well.
Other good sources for used boats include word-of-mouth, classified ads, and YC/Jr. Program bulletin boards, and the “gear exchange” at www.usoda.org.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about purchasing a boat, what “extras” are worth getting right away, and what can be purchased later, sails, spars and blades. The process can seem daunting, particularly until you are familiar with the equipment and the language, but we’re ready to help!

Understanding Regatta Fees and Membership Requirements:
ART fees do not include regatta entry fees which are typically paid at the time of registering for the event.
Membership Fees: NBYA membership is required of all ART participants. USODA and US SAILING memberships are mandatory for only certain regattas.
NBYA (For more information on NBYA click here.): The Narragansett Bay Yachting Association is the organizing authority for sailing in the Bay. NBYA helps organize and manage activities and events on a broad scale, including regattas. NBYA Junior Membership ($35) is required of every youth sailor participating in the NBYA Junior Weekend Regattas, Junior Race Week, and NBYA Team Racing (as well as many other events).
USODA (For More Infromation on the USODA click here.): The United States Optimist Dinghy Association is the organizing authority for Optimist racing nationally. USODA publishes an awesome quarterly magazine for Opti sailors that contains great information on rigging and go fast tips, fun articles and more. Membership in USODA is required for sanctioned events like the Optimist New England Championships.
US SAILING (For More Infromation on the US Sailing Assoc. click here.): US SAILING is the national governing body for the sport of sailing in the US. US SAILING Junior Membership is required of sailors participating in Junior Race Week/Junior Olympic Festival. Benefits also include a years subscription to the quarterly magazine Junior Sailor, and a copy of the Racing Rules of Sailing.

Further information, membership applications for NBYA/US SAILING/USODA and regatta registration packets will be mailed to SNORT participants after their completed and paid registration has been received.
