420 /Laser Brenton Cove Racing Program | Optimist Brenton Cove Racing Program | Application
Optimist, Club 420 and Laser Racing Programs to combine efforts.

Dear Sailing Families.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of both Ida Lewis Yacht Club and Sail Newport, we are proud to announce a very exciting collaboration. In discussions dating back to mid summer 2009, it has been our desire to create a new dynamic in the Sailboat Racing Programs in Brenton Cove. Towards that end, we are pleased to announce that Ida Lewis and Sail Newport have joined forces to form the Brenton Cove Racing Program.
There will be an Open House on January 27th at the Seaman's Church at 6:30 PM to discuss the program, goals, vision and go over any questions.

  • This Brenton Cove Racing Program will be run at both Ida Lewis Yacht Club (Optimists) and Sail Newport (C420's and Lasers).

  • Camaraderie, competiton and passion for the sport will be the hallmarks of these programs.

  • Oversight of the programs will be combined between Ida Lewis Yacht Club and Sail Newport Staffs.

  • Combining resources and facilities for the good of the sailors will make our programs more accessible to more children and families wishing to take part in racing programs throughout our area.

Both of our organizations have seen ebbs and floods of children throughout the years. It has led to inconsistency in numbers and the inability to achieve critical mass. It is only through a group effort that we will be able to offer the best possible programs across the spectrum of proficiency which we see in our programs. All racers will benefit from this relationship from the “new to racing sailors” just entering the competitive sailing experience to the “advanced racer” who aims as high as the sport will take him or her! By creating this joint venture we will ensure that the sailors have a place to go throughout the pyramid of skills that we see in the sailors in our programs. Our goals have been simple from our first meeting. “To provide programs that provide all young sailors a springboard to a lifelong passion for sailboat racing”.

Galen Largay and Kim Hapgood have our full backing and are actively recruiting the best coaches from the US and the World to come to Newport and become part of our Newport Harbor Family. Thank you to all who have added your input. Ida Lewis Yacht Club and Sail Newport, Rhode Island’s Public Sailing Center are now full partners in the effort to foster the next generation of great Newport Sailors!

No sailor will be left at the curb and we look forward to a great family atmosphere for these programs.

Think Spring!
Mike Muessel Commodore, Ida Lewis Yacht Club.
