2006 Regatta Report 254 Boats from 18 States, the USVI, Canada and France are in Newport this weekend for the 22nd running of the Newport Regatta. Sail Newport, with support of the Narragansett Bay sailing community are hosts for this annual thrash around the bay!
With racing covering 5 racing circles in Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound, there is racing absolutely everywhere. Saturday's conditions were very light as the boats left the harbor, but patience was rewarded with a 8-14 knot SE breeze that had RC's running multiple races for their divisions. Phillipe Kahn's "Pegasus" with Marty Kullman (FL) at the helm took the Farr 40 class apart yesterday with 1,2,1,2 scores in the 4 races run. That gives them a 5 point lead over Portsmouth RI sailor Jeff Siegal's team on "Appreciation".
The other classes on the Division 1 Circle were Mumm 30's and J/105. Rick Swann's team on "Cygnet" is leading the Mumms, and Newport's Lotz family were on top of the J/105 Fleet in their "Indefatigable".
The Largest keelboat class at this year's event is the Etchells, and with 3 races to add to the 2 on Friday, this fleet's cream is rising to the top. Phil Garland and his team on "Mahi-Mahi" came back and won the day on Saturday, pulling within 9 points of Toronto's Hank Lammens.. Go to Cory Silken Photography for all Regatta Photos!
