Boats We Sail

Dinghy Program and Pre-A.R.T.

Optimists

8’ pram for ages 7–15, used by beginners to racers.  Sailors move out of Optis and into other boats when they out-grow or age out of them.  A student can comfortably sail an Opti until they are over five feet and/or over 120 pounds, and they are eligible to sail until they turn 15.

Bugs

Laser Performance Bugs, a recent addition to the fleet, combine ease of rigging with fun and performance. Easily sailed by students young and old, the LP Bugs are proving to be a fun, safe and durable vehicle for instruction.

Hunter 140

14’ centerboard boat used by beginner and beginner/intermediates aged 12–17. This is a stable, comfortable sloop sailed by 3 students, that provides a great learning platform and appropriate stepping stone to the faster and more agile C420.

C420s

C420s (double-handed) dinghies used by 13–17 year-old intermediates, advanced and racing sailors. Scholastic or Collegiate-rigged 420's sail with main and jib for the intermediate skill level sailors, while advanced and beginner racing 420s have spinnakers and trapeze wires for advanced performance and racing sailing.

Windsurfers

Windsurfers will be actively integrated into the youth program and used by all ages and all skill levels as an additional training and learning tool. Windsurfers are extremely effective for helping students grasp the concept and effect of wind and sails working together.

Keelboat Program

J/22

22 ft. sloop rigged keelboats used in the keelboat classes by all skill levels. Groups of four students of similar skill level ages sail with an instructor. The J/22 is a performance oriented keelboat comfortably managed by 12–17 year olds. The boats include a spinnaker for more advanced student skill levels.
